Introduction
Within the Al.Tr.A. Partnership we investigated how we can use the language of drama as a teaching tool, encouraging caregivers to introduce personal expression and creativity into their work.
The Al.Tr.A. Partnership aimed to analyse, in an international perspective, a new model of intervention to be used by professional caregivers working in residential care services (nursing homes, assisted living centres, continuing care retirement communities, adult care centres and the like).
The model of intervention aims to give professional caregivers the possibility of integrating their competencies with techniques inspired by social theatre. This in order to modify the interaction with the guests, traditionally based on an approach which sees them as persons losing their competencies, from both a physical but a cognitive point of view.
Social theatre is a powerful tool that develops the feeling of belonging to a community in those who live or work in closed spaces like prisons, hospitals, but also residential care homes.
The main aim has been to exchange experience and good practice in order to checking if this approach might be applied also in the other Countries involved in the project.
Through visits to nursing homes, training centres and the organisation of workshops, the partners verified that the needs in the various countries are similar.
The partners involved in the project have been active in raising interest around the topic through their networks, and have widely disseminated the philosophy of the methodology.
